Positioning
Graphics in Relation to Text
You
can choose from several different wrapping options to affect how
text and graphics display within a document. After inserting a clip
art image or graphic file, follow these steps to change the way
it displays in relation to the text on the page.
-
Select
the clip art or graphic you want to change.
-
Select
Format, Picture (or click the Format Picture button
on the Picture toolbar). The Format Picture dialog
box displays.
-
Activate
the Layout tab.

-
In
the Wrapping style area, select the wrapping style you
want to apply.
-
In
line with text - Places the graphic at the insertion point,
in line with the document text. The bottom edge of the graphic
aligns with the bottom of the text in the current line.
-
Square
- Wraps text around all sides of a square boundary that
surrounds the graphic.
-
Tight
- Wraps text tightly around the edges of the actual image
(not around the square boundary surrounding the graphic).
Note: This
option typically wraps text more precisely around clip art images
than around graphics inserted from a file.
-
Behind
text - Places the graphic behind the document text. Rather
than wrapping around the graphic, text flows right over it.
-
In
front of text - Places the graphic in front of the document
text. Rather than wrapping around the graphic, text flows
behind it.
-
In the Horizontal alignment area, if appropriate, select
whether you want the graphic aligned on the Left side,
Center, or Right side of the page.
or
Select Other to specify another position for the graphic.
(Then click
to specify precise measurements or click and drag the graphic
within the document to move it.)
Note:
The Horizontal alignment
options are not available when the selected wrapping style
is In line with text.
-
Click
to close the dialog box and apply your changes.
Note:
After adjusting the wrapping options, you may need to switch
to Print Layout view (if you are not currently working in that view)
in order to see the graphic within the document. If you are working
in Normal view, you can see graphics only if the In line with
text option is selected.
