Windows XP Getting Started

Objective

Learn to use the Windows XP operating system to work efficiently with programs and files.

Prerequisite Skills

Comfortable with general PC operation.

Course Description

Do you have little or no Windows experience and need to learn how to access programs and work with files on your computer with Windows XP?

Attend this course if you want to:

  • Start up and log on to Windows XP.

  • Understand the desktop and desktop icons.

  • Use a mouse to navigate and select items.

  • Use the Start button and Start menu to launch programs and access various tools.

  • Open, minimize, maximize, move, resize, and close windows on your computer.

  • Understand how to use the various items on the taskbar at the bottom of your screen.

  • View and navigate through the drives, folders, and files on your computer using My Computer.

  • Complete basic file management tasks, such as creating folders, copying files, and deleting files and folders.

  • Select a default printer.

  • Use My Network Places to access other computers and files on your network.

  • Create and use shortcuts to frequently accessed programs or files.

  • Close a "locked up" program.

  • Get help in Windows XP.

  • Lock your workstation so others cannot use it while you are away from your desk.

  • Shut down your computer properly.
