Word 97 Overview

Objective:
Learn the terminology of Microsoft Word and develop the skills to create and work with basic documents.

Prerequisite Skills:
Comfortable with the Windows environment.

Course Description:
Are
you new to Microsoft Word? Do you want to create simple letters, reports, and other documents? Do you need to edit, save, and print documents? Do you want to spell check your documents and learn to use on-line help?

Attend this course if you want to:

  • Learn what you can do with Microsoft Word.
  • Start Word and create a simple memo.
  • Learn how to move around in a document using the mouse and keyboard.
  • Make changes to documents.
  • Open and save documents from/to your hard disk, a diskette, or a shared network drive.
  • Print a document on a local or network printer.
  • Learn techniques to select the text you want to work with.
  • Move and copy text within your document.
  • Spell check your document.
  • Grammar check your document.
  • Find text and replace it with other text.

Word 97 Document Formatting

Objective:
Learn the formatting techniques necessary to make your Word documents more readable, more visually pleasing, and more effective as communication tools.

Prerequisite Skills:
Comfortable with basic Word capabilities.

Course Description:
Do you want to make your documents look more professional? Do you want to highlight certain words or portions of your document? Do you want text to line up where you want it to? Do you want to change your margins or the look of the page?

Attend this course if you want to:

  • Apply bold, italics, or underlining to text.
  • Change the type style (font) of your text.
  • Adjust the amount of space between characters.
  • Copy formatting applied to a portion of your document somewhere else.
  • Learn to align text in various ways.
  • Create a numbered or bulleted list.
  • Force a line to break within a paragraph or list.
  • Create and use tabs to align text.
  • View your document in final form before you print it.
  • Change margins to allow more or less to fit on a page.
  • Change the orientation of your page from portrait to landscape.
  • Insert page breaks.
  • Insert section breaks so that different sections can be formatted differently from one another.

Word 97 Tables

Objective:
Learn how to create tables to present information more effectively.

Prerequisite Skills:
Comfortable with Word and with basic formatting capabilities.

Course Description:
If you're using tabs to enter columns of text, do you ever end up with a mess when you need to add or delete information? Do tabs seem to "jump" around in your document unexpectedly? Would you like to learn another way to present information effectively or to define the layout of your page?

Attend this course if you want to:

  • Create a table to present rows and columns of information.
  • Draw tables with cells of various sizes.
  • Add or delete rows and/or columns to/from a table (without messing up your data!).
  • Change the height of rows and width of columns to accommodate your text.
  • Have Word automatically choose the "best fit" for the data in your table.
  • Merge or split cells as needed.
  • Select from several format types that include borders, shading, and color.
  • Create your own customized tables.
  • Sort table text alphabetically or numerically.
  • Convert existing tabbed text into a table.
  • Perform calculations in your table (such as adding a column of numbers).
  • Create charts based on table data.

Word 97 Working with Styles & Templates

Objective:
Learn to use and create styles and templates to more efficiently create documents in Word.

Prerequisite Skills:

Course Description:
Do you want your headings and text consistently formatted throughout your document? Do you want to change your formatting and have that change automatically applied to the rest of your document? Do you want to use Word's built-in styles and templates? Would you like to modify Word's standard styles or templates or make your own?

Attend this course if you want to:

  • Apply Word's standard styles to text in your document.
  • Create styles that affect things such as bolding, italicizing, underlining, and font.
  • Create styles that affect things such as spacing, indentations, and tabs.
  • Modify existing styles.
  • Indicate that one style is always followed by another style.
  • Use AutoFormat to automatically apply formatting to a document based on its styles.
  • Display the style area to view the applied style.
  • Create boilerplate text and formatting into a template.
  • Create a new document based on a template.
  • Customize an existing template.
  • Add styles to templates.

Word 97 Working with Long Documents

Objective:
Learn techniques to help you format and navigate long documents more efficiently.

Prerequisite Skills:

Course Description:
Do you create long documents such as reports or proposals? Do you want to improve the readability of these documents and make them look more professional?

Attend this course if you want to:

  • Number the pages in your document.
  • Insert page and section breaks.
  • Add headers or footers to your documents (and vary them between sections).
  • Mark text or a graphic with a bookmark for fast access.
  • Cross reference other pages in your document (and have the page number update automatically!).
  • See two portions of your document (or two documents) at the same time by splitting the screen.
  • Further explain text in your document with footnotes (at the bottom of the page) or endnotes (at the end of the document).
  • Save multiple versions of the same document.
  • Use the Document Map to easily navigate a document.

Objective:

Do you want to track changes to documents made by multiple reviewers?

Attend this course if you want to:

  • Navigate through the topics in your document using the Online Layout view.
  • Change the font effects to easily recognize a specific reviewer.
  • Accept or reject the changes suggested by a reviewer.
  • Add non-printing comments to a document (similar to writing in the margin).
  • Protect a document from permanent changes.
  • Merge changes from multiple reviewers into a final document.
  • Compare two versions of a document and electronically note the differences.

  • Protect documents from changes.
  • Customize AutoCorrect to automatically correct typos you commonly make.
  • Create AutoText entries to quickly input repetitive information.
  • Use AutoSummarize to generate a summary of the key points in a document.
  • Create a watermark that prints behind the text of your document (e.g., Draft, Confidential).
  • Save time by using Word's shortcut menus.
